Well, that didn’t take long. Seems like we just took out our summer wardrobes. Fall can be a stressful time. We say goodbye to the warm weather, the days grow shorter and we get back to work. That stress can lead to emotional eating, less activity and an overall mood that isn’t quite as ‘sunny’ as it was not long ago.
But, if you start better preparing yourself for the new season, you can minimize the downside and actually turn the fall into a happier, healthier season.
Try These Ideas for a Healthier Fall
Even if some of these tips don’t work for you, hopefully, they inspire you to come up with your own ideas for better health and weight management this fall.
1. Don’t Be Afraid of the Cooler Temperatures
After all the warm days, when the first autumn breezes blow, they can send you indoors fast. But the more time you spend inside, and less outside, the less activity you’ll get and the more you’re likely to eat. Make it a point to dress warmly and get outside as often as you can.
2. Try to Wake Up a Little Earlier
Even just five or ten minutes can work. Why? If you are prone to feeling down in the fall and winter, it probably has a lot to do with not getting as much daylight. By the time the winter hits, there’s a good chance you already wake up in the dark. But in the fall, you can slow the effect of darker evenings by getting more daylight in your mornings.
3. Dig the Harvest
We are very fortunate to live in a country with so many different seasons. Autumn brings its own unique taste sensations. Pumpkin seeds are packed with protein, fibre and nutrition, including magnesium, potassium, and L-tryptophan. Also, look for sales on berries and make a pie – low sugar, of course. And give butternut squash and the sweet potato a try.
