Loose skin may be an unsightly symptom of weight loss. If you lose 50+ pounds, then any skin that was stretched prior to weight loss may hang loosely around your arms, legs, or stomach. It is important to know that there is no way to determine whether or not your skin will be loose after weight loss. Typically, mild weight loss does not make it happen. But, if you are losing a substantial amount of weight, it is more likely.
Here are a few things you can do during your weight loss journey to try to prevent it.
Compression Gear
You may have seen or used certain garments that cling tightly to all the areas they cover on your body . This is compression gear that works to increase heat and promote sweat during workouts. When it is wrapped tightly around your waist, arms, or legs, it helps to keep your skin tight, which can help slim your physique and prevent loose skin.
Increase Your Water Intake
Drink water, drink water, drink water! Water helps your skin’s elasticity, keeping it tight and healthy. When you lose weight, your skin can remain tight due to its elasticity levels. So, drink as much water as you can during your weight loss journey.
Take Your Time
If you lose a lot of weight in a short period of time, then you will be more prone to loose skin. This is because your body does not have time to adjust to its new shape. Losing 1-2 pounds a week is a safe amount to lose each week. And, allowing your body to take its time can allow your skin to stay tight and firm during the process.
Build Muscle
When you have excess skin, building muscle can help. Since muscle can fill out your skin, it can occupy any loose areas and make them appear more toned. So, try lifting weights during your workout regime, as opposed to only cardio or other activities.
